China and Tibet is more than a little like Canada and Quebec
By Kevin Potvin/The Republic of East Vancouver
And those who criticize China today run the risk of double standards

Canadians should pause before joining their leaders and the leaders of most Western countries in condemning China following recent events in Tibet.

The relationship between Tibet and China is not too different from the relationship between Quebec and Canada. It is arguable that the sentiment among Quebecers as a whole toward Canada is even less attached than the sentiment of Tibetens as a whole toward China.

An interesting perspective from Kevin Potvin.

For some reason, this piece reminded me a bit of Jane Jacobs' own writing style, with the same kind of no-nonsense overview of events and an unemotional reasoning about things.

Potvin once described himself to me as a "poster boy" for the Bloc as a 2nd generation FHQ not speaking a word of French! He was also a sacrifice offering at the altar when Stéphane Dion made a deal with the Greens last year over Potvin earlier infamous candid essay on 9/11; merci Stéphane pour nettoyer notre environnement mental! Potvin had been the Green candidate in East Van until then. He is an absolutely awesome writer. I once tried to interview him for my Canard (without success).
